Why we love the Eastern Suburbs!
|
The Eastern Suburbs are blessed with a rugged, particularly dramatic coastline that epitomizes Australia's masculine natural beauty (as opposed to the more feminine splendor of the English or European countryside).
ESTV's multi media editor and artist Derek Maitland takes you on a stroll from Maroubra to the world famous Bondi Beach with a stop over to view the annual Sculptures by the Sea exhibition.
It's an inspiring hike, following the cliff tops and headlands where the dramatic art sculptured on the cliffs themselves is highlighted by the natural gardens of indigenous plants and blooms in the native parkland that surround them.
With trails that snake over extraordinary rock formations high above the pounding seas and around the turquoise waters and old boatyard of Gordon's Bay until you reach one of Sydney's oldest cemeteries, resting place of many of Australia's great early settlers.
The decent to Tamarama Bay, a smaller, cosier, beach where families pick nick on weekends or go for a bar-b-que after work, is like arriving at a deserted island cove. It's hard to believe you are only 15 minutes from the city.

Finally as you wind past more craggy rock formations and cliff-faces sculptured by the hand of nature you arrive at the vast sweep of Bondi Beach itself.
To the lucky residents of the Eastern Suburbs, visitors and tourists and to Derek with his artist's eye for beauty it's the ancient rock formations that make this walk so fascinating.

Sculptures by the Sea Exhibition
With all this natural beauty, it's little wonder that the section of this trail between Tamarama and Bondi is the site each year of one of Sydney's most popular art exhibitions -- Sculptures by the Sea. This unique exhibition has been going on for 13 years and attracts the creations of hundreds of artists and hundreds of thousands of visitors. If you missed it or you have not had the chance to visit the most beautiful coastal region in the Lucky Country's most beautiful city, Sydney, watch this video and let us know what you think of it.
Do you know other scenic spots in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs that you think we should feature? Leave us your comment below and we will film it and dedicate it to you.
