Starlight Day Short of Target FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday May 17, 2010 Starlight Day is about galvanising the community to raise much needed funds to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. The need for Starlight’s programs is increasing with a child admitted to a hospital in Australia every minute of every day. It is critical that we reach our Starlight Day target of $2.8million so that Starlight can ensure it is right there like a beacon of light for seriously ill children and their families in their darkest times. The Starlight Day campaign is currently tracking to be over half a million dollars short of our $2.8million target and we urgently call on all Australians to help us by purchasing Starlight merchandise or making a donation at www.starlight.org.au or by calling 1300 727 827. There is no doubt; the effort put in over the past week by our “purple & yellow” army of over 6,000 volunteers across Australia has been extraordinary. For the remainder of the month of May, a number of Starlight volunteers will be returning to shopping centre’s and will be positioned in select locations across Australia where they will be collecting cash donations and selling Starlight merchandise that was delayed by logistical issues prior to Starlight Day last week. Starlight merchandise is also available to purchase in Caltex service stations, Mitre 10 stores and in Victoria, RACV. Starlight CEO, Louise Baxter said: “Australian’s have shown strongly that they support Starlight’s goal to bring happiness, laughter and support into the lives of seriously ill children so we hope that by extending the appeal until the end of May we can still achieve our target.” “Unfortunately, some locations in NSW particularly, were affected by merchandise delivery issues prior to Starlight Day. We can now assure communities in those areas affected that they too will have the opportunity to contribute to Starlight’s vital mission and help us reach our incredibly important target. It’s imperative that we make the absolute most of the community’s eagerness to support Starlight.” Starlight’s perennial favourite’s such as our Dinosaur Design star key-rings, stress stars and flashing wands proved extremely popular over Starlight weekend, and brand new items such as environmentally friendly shopping bags and soccer balls were also very well received by the community.
